IMPORTANT RESULT FOR CANCER SUFFERER
This Manchester client has metastatic colorectal cancer. His consultant oncologist said that his best chance of success would be to take a combination of two drugs. One of the drugs was not available under the NHS. This resulted in our client having to fund the entire cost of his treatment on a private basis (including the drug that the NHS did recognise!). The cost of the treatment was extremely expensive.
We put forward an application to the local Primary Care Trust (PCT) for them to fund the cost of this life-saving treatment.
The PCT has a commissioning panel which meets on a monthly basis to consider all types of treatments and procedures not normally funded by the NHS. In order to succeed in an application to the PCT, we had to prove to the PCT that there were “exceptional circumstances” why the PCT ought to fund the treatment.
The commissioning panel met on the 27th September and agreed to fund all treatment provided, on or after, this date.
This ground-breaking decision is obviously a source of great relief to our client and his family.
