COULD A LAWSUIT BE GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

Could a lawsuit actually be good for your health?

According to new research, published in the September issue of the journal Pain, people with chronic back pain  (CBP) who have experienced “some” hardship in their lives tend to experience less physical disability and spend less time in doctors' surgeries than those who experienced no hardship or a lot of hardship.

“The data suggest that adversity-exposure also may protect against psychiatric disturbances that occur with CBP,” said study author Mark Seery, assistant professor of psychology at the University at Buffalo. “Additional analyses found no alternative explanations of our findings.” The study examined 396 adults with chronic back pain between 2001-2003 for exposure to 37 traumatic events during their lifetime, including illness, violence, bereavement, disaster, social and environmental stresses and various relationship stresses. The subjects then rated their physical impairment, frequency of back pain treatment, use of prescription pain killers and whether they were seeking treatment for related psychiatric conditions. Exposure to a moderate amount of difficulty made patients more resilient to their back pain, the  researchers concluded.

“It appears,” said Prof Seery, “that adversity may promote the development of psychological and social resources that help one tolerate adversity, which in this case leads to better CBP-related outcomes. It may be that the experience of prior, low levels of adversity may cause sufferers to reappraise stressful and potentially debilitating symptoms of CBP as minor annoyances that do not substantially interfere with life.”

Do you suffer from chronic back pain that was the result of someone else's negligence? If the answer is yes, taking legal action is one method of adversity you could consider!
