Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)

AS is a condition where some or all of the joints of the spine fuse together. It is a painful, progressive rheumatic disease mainly affecting the spine but also other joints, tendons and ligaments. Eyes, lungs, bowel and heart can also be involved.
Typically striking people in their late teens and twenties, it can affect men, women and children and is said to affect about 1 in 200 men and 1 in 500 women.
What might previously have been a mild condition can become much more painful and pronounced after an accident.
