Muscular dystrophy patients reveal NHS failings

Accident and Injury Claims news
27th January 2010
A cross-party group of Welsh politicians is meeting today to discuss failures by the NHS to effectively treat muscular dystrophy patients.

Families will participate in the meeting to share their experiences of the degenerative condition. Topics for discussion will include the long wait for vital equipment and the lack of NHS services such as physiotherapy.

Lynne Taylor, whose 15-year-old son Ross has muscular dystrophy, told the South Wales Echo that treatment for the condition is particularly poor in Wales.

"If we lived in London, I truly believe Ross would be much healthier. He would have more physio, he would have got steroids earlier, his wheelchair wait would have been shorter," she said.

Ms Taylor added that NHS physiotherapy services are inadequate in Cardiff and across Wales, requiring families to travel to London for treatment.

According to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, more than 60,000 people are currently affected by the condition in the UK.
