ME sufferers 'often do not get the right treatment'
Accident and Injury Claims news29th January 2010
ME sufferers often do not get the right treatment because their symptoms can be associated with a number of other illnesses, an expert has said.Doctor Debbie Wake told Stv.tv that health claims relating to ME, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, can be difficult to establish because there is still no clear definition of the condition.
She said that illnesses such as diabetes, thyroid disease and viral problems like glandular fever should be ruled out to ensure ME patients are not given the wrong treatment.
Dr Wake referred to Kay Gilderdale, who was cleared this week of attempted murder after helping her daughter Lynn, an ME sufferer for 17 years, to commit suicide. She said the case had helped to raise public awareness about the illness.
"Sufferers have to deal with a whole range of symptoms, which can vary from fatigue, to muscle and joint pain, debilitating pain, sleep and gastric disturbances, and sometimes even paralysis," said Dr Wake.
Earlier this month, rheumatologist Mark Borigini wrote for Psychology Today that the discovery of a link between ME and the retrovirus XMRV remains highly questionable.
