Education 'is key to managing fibromyalgia'

Accident and Injury Claims news

Every woman with fibromyalgia should begin by educating themselves about the condition, an expert has said.

Writing for stltoday.com, Faye Cohen, a rheumatologist in the US, noted that eight out of ten fibromyalgia sufferers in the country are women.

She defined fibromyalgia as a chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain for three or more months and said that while researchers do not fully understand its causes, women should read up about the condition to reassure themselves that the pain is real.

Dr Cohen suggested that both genetic and environmental factors such as stress or trauma could trigger the illness, adding: "The theory is that pain signals in the brain and central nervous system are amplified."

In suggesting fibromyalgia treatments, she said that lifestyle changes like regular exercise and stress reduction techniques such as medication could help. She also identified a range of fibromyalgia-specific medications including Cymbalta, Lyrica and Savella.

A study published earlier this week in the journal Pain found that fibromyalgia sufferers can also ease their pain symptoms by slowing their breathing rate.
