Breakthrough heart scanner will allow earlier diagnosis

A new heart scanner will significantly improve the process of diagnosing heart conditions.

The portable magnetometer, which measures magnetic fields, is being developed by a research team at the University of Leeds.

Due to its unprecedented sensitivity to magnetic fluctuations the device will be able to detect a number of conditions, including heart problems in foetuses, earlier than currently available diagnostic techniques.

In addition, the device will allow nurses to carry out heart scans for the first time, helping to relieve pressure on hospital waiting lists.

The research team found that the heart produces its own distinctive magnetic 'signature'. By measuring the variations in this signature, the team believe the magnetometer will help to reveal the presence of a cardiac condition.

Ben Varcoe, who led the research team, said: "Early detection of heart conditions improves the prospects for successful treatment. This system will also quickly identify people who need immediate treatment."

Earlier this month, a study published in the latest issue of the Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions journal also revealed that people with chest pain who have electrocardiogram assessments prior to arriving at hospital will be treated quicker
